Forestry Division
The Forestry Division is committed to planting, maintaining and the overall health of Midland’s urban forest. The City of Flushing maintains trees in the public right of way, parks, cemetery and other municipal properties in the city. Trees help keep our city cool, mitigate storm water and make Flushing beautiful.
The Public Works Department Forestry Division receives many calls each year regarding the process of tree removal. Below are details on how this process works.
- Trees are marked for removal based on observation by the city's forestry crew or by homeowners.
- If a tree is deemed dead or dying, it will be marked indicating what action will be taken. Please understand that the City of Flushing does not normally remove live trees unless it is causing damage to infrastructure or is a safety concern.
- If a tree is scheduled for removal, the homeowner will be notified. Once the tree is removed, small pieces will be chipped and the trunk of the tree will be left for firewood.
- The city will dispose of this firewood unless the homeowner would like the wood (typically firewood will disappear within days if left on the out lawn).
- A stump will temporarily be left at the site until a stumping contractor can remove it. Stumping is a seasonal project and it could take several months for stumps to be ground.
- Once the stump is cleared, the city will repair any damage to the site caused by machinery.
- Homeowners may request permission to plant their own tree at their expense. This tree will automatically become City property once planted. Oak trees and maple trees such as Red, Sugar and Norway are recommended. (Sec. 99.77. - Guide for selection and planting of trees)
