CITY OF FLINT UTILITIES DEPARTMENT
WATER POLLUTION CONTROL DIVISION

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
August 15, 2023

On August 15, 2023 at approximately 10:00 am the Flint Water Pollution Control Facility
discharged wet weather flows, consisting of a mixture of storm water and sewage, from its Third
Avenue Pumping Station to the Flint River.
This discharge is due to excessive wet weather flows, which exceeded the plant’s capacity for full treatment of the rain water and sewage.
The Wastewater Treatment Plant has been undergoing major construction upgrades and its capacity is
currently limited by the need to take some of the process equipment out of service during this
construction. This forced limiting the flow through the plant which caused the discharge at the 3rd Ave. pumping station.
